Aims and Objectives

  • Perceive gender as a concept linked to every aspect of society -i.e. perceive the gendered character of citizenship, of labor market, of educational systems and the gendered significations of the family.
  • Read Turkish history through gender lenses: understand the political character of gender in late Ottoman and Turkish history/ understand gender’s crucial role in the Ottoman and Turkish modernization projects.
  • Assess the impact of the various social transformations in Turkey as far as gender relations are concerned.

 

Course outline

  1. Introduction: the concept of gender.
  2. Gender relationships from Tanzimat to the Young Turkish Revolution: education, labor, family and politics. Discourses and practices.
  3. Gender-based social demands from 1908 to 1922.
  4. Gender patterns, women’s movement and state repression during the single-party period.
  5. Gender dimensions of the modernization project.
  6. Gender and labor market in Turkey.
  7. Turkish family(ies): transformation of gender relationships and hierarchies.
  8. Gender dimensions of education in Turkey.
  9. Gender identities and transformations in the Turkish rural areas.
  10. Gender dimensions of political participation and representation in Turkey.
  11. Turkish women’s/feminist movements after the single party period.
  12. Gender dimensions of Turkish political Islam.
  13. Discussion/Summing up/paper presentations

 

 

Course assessment

Assessment is effected: (a) through a mid-term exam or written assignment of 2.000 words (30% of the overall grade) on themes connected with the course.  Students are encouraged to present a draft of their assignment during the last session for comments by the tutor and the other students. (b) through the final written exams (70% of the overall grade).
